An Introduction to Railway Operations PlanningAn Introduction to Railway Operations Planning is a translated, expanded and updated version of a book originally written in Norwegian. It starts with a brief summary of how railways work, and the principles of demand forecasting, project development and the information needed for the planning process. The longest chapter of the book is devoted to an explanation of the train planning process, including the preparation of input data from simulations and output data for public timetables. This is followed by specific material on planning other aspects of the operational railway: capacity, personnel, rolling stock, performance, stations and contingencies/special events. Discussion of commercial and energy perspectives is followed by a final chapter on Cost: Benefit analysis and how railway planners can actually get their projects built - and delivering the benefits that were intended.
